What Hawaii Taught Me About Home | Finding Peace, Purpose & Love Through Interior Design
Hey Roomies!
There are places you visit...
And then there are places that become part of your soul.
For me, that place has always been Hawaii.
When people ask why I love Hawaii so much, they usually expect me to talk about the beaches, the sunsets, the palm trees, or the warm ocean breeze.
And yes... those things are breathtaking.
But that's not why Hawaii lives in my heart.
Hawaii reminds me of something much bigger.
It reminds me of how life is supposed to feel.

Hawaii Isn't Just Beautiful...
It's intentional.
Everything about the islands seems to invite you to slow down.
The breeze never rushes.
The waves don't compete with one another.
Even the flowers bloom in their own perfect time.
When you're there, you stop looking at your watch.
You start looking at the people beside you.
And honestly...
I think our homes should do the exact same thing.
As an interior designer, I've spent years helping families create homes that don't simply look beautiful.
I want them to feel peaceful.
Because a beautiful room means very little if your heart never gets a chance to rest inside it.
Jim Helped Me See That
Some of my most treasured memories happened in Hawaii with Jim.
Those weren't extravagant moments.
They weren't perfectly planned.
They were simple.
Morning walks.
Dinner by the ocean.
Laughing until we cried.
Watching sunsets without saying much at all.
Looking back now, I realize something.
The places weren't what made those memories special.
The people were.
Jim had this incredible way of making ordinary moments feel extraordinary.
And I think about that every time I walk into our new home.
Because while houses change...
Love doesn't.
Love leaves fingerprints.
In photographs.
In traditions.
In the little things we choose to keep.
Sometimes I unpack a picture frame and suddenly I'm standing on a beach in Hawaii all over again.
Not because I'm there...
But because love has a way of traveling with us.
Good Interior Design Should Tell Your Story
One thing Hawaii taught me is that the most beautiful spaces don't shout.
They whisper.
They don't overwhelm you.
They welcome you.
That's how I approach every project at Rooms By Roma.
I'm not trying to recreate a magazine cover.
I'm trying to create a feeling.
Because luxury isn't measured by how expensive your furniture is.
Luxury is walking into your home and immediately feeling...
"I belong here."
That's what I want for every client.
Whether it's one room or an entire home, my goal is always the same:
To design spaces that reflect your story—not someone else's.
Nature Has Always Been the Best Designer
One of the things I admire most about Hawaii is how effortlessly nature and architecture live together.
Nothing feels forced.
The colors complement the landscape.
Natural materials age beautifully.
Light pours into every space.
Indoors and outdoors seem to become one.
As a designer, I carry those lessons with me every day.
I find myself reaching for:
• organic textures
• warm woods
• natural stone
• woven fibers
• greenery
• soft layers
• light that changes throughout the day
Because nature has never followed trends.
And neither should your home.
A Home Should Hold Your Memories
As Alexa and I continue unpacking this new house, we've discovered something beautiful.
Every box holds a chapter of our lives.
Photographs.
Souvenirs.
Frames.
Shells collected on beaches.
Pieces of Hawaii.
Pieces of Jim.
Pieces of us.
Someone else might see clutter.
I see legacy.
Your home should never feel like a showroom.
It should feel like your autobiography.
The coffee mug from your favorite trip.
The blanket your grandmother made.
The artwork your child painted.
The shell collected during your honeymoon.
Those pieces become anchors.
They remind us who we are when life starts moving too fast.
Hawaii Taught Me That Home Is a Feeling
People often ask me what my favorite project has been.
The truth?
It isn't one particular room.
It's every family I've helped create a home for.
Because home has very little to do with square footage.
Home is:
the smell of dinner cooking.
The sound of laughter in the kitchen.
A quiet cup of coffee before everyone wakes up.
A child running barefoot through the hallway.
A hug that lasts a little longer.
Home is where healing happens.
Home is where memories stay alive.
Home is where love continues to grow—even after loss.
Hawaii reminds me of that every single time I think about it.
Carry the Spirit of Aloha Home
One of my favorite Hawaiian words is Aloha.
Most people translate it as "hello" or "goodbye."
But it's so much more.
Aloha is kindness.
Aloha is compassion.
Aloha is gratitude.
Aloha is presence.
Aloha is choosing love.
What if we designed our homes with that spirit?
What if every room encouraged connection?
What if every gathering space invited conversation?
What if every design decision wasn't about impressing guests—but about loving the people who live there?
That's the kind of home I want to create.
Every single time.
Final Thoughts From Roma
If Hawaii has taught me anything...
It's this:
Life moves quickly.
The seasons change.
Homes change.
We change.
But love...
Love leaves beautiful traces.
It lives in the photographs on our walls.
The heirlooms on our shelves.
The laughter echoing through our kitchens.
The sunsets we'll never forget.
And the people who shaped us long after they're gone.
Jim will always be part of every home I create.
Not because I recreate the past...
But because he taught me what home truly means.
He taught me that the most beautiful spaces aren't measured by perfection.
They're measured by peace.
By kindness.
By family.
By grace.
So wherever you are today, roomies...
Create a home that tells your story.
Fill it with memories instead of just furniture.
Choose love over perfection.
Choose meaning over trends.
Choose peace over pressure.
Because at the end of the day...
The most beautiful home you'll ever design...
Is one that reminds the people inside it just how deeply they are loved.
Mahalo for walking this journey with me.
And as always...
I look forward to creating with you.
