Dining Room Makeover: Big Scale, Boucle Chairs, and Black Accents Done Right

Hey roomies, it’s Roma.
Today, I’m opening the doors to one of my favorite spaces in the entire house — the dining room. Yes, the place where we gather, eat, laugh, cry, and occasionally wonder why we invited certain people over in the first place. It’s a vibe, and like any good vibe, it deserves intention, drama, and a little unapologetic boldness.

Let’s talk scale — my love language. When you walk into a room with high ceilings and generous square footage, you cannot tiptoe your way through the design. Baby pieces don’t stand a chance. This is where my custom dining table comes in: oversized, grounded, and built to command attention like the Beyoncé of furniture. Paired with sculptural, cloud-like boucle chairs, the whole setup feels luxurious without ever straying into “don’t sit there” territory. It’s comfort and confidence having a beautiful little moment together.

Now, let’s chat contrast. Dark wood against light boucle? Say less. It’s one of my favorite pairings because it instantly creates depth, elegance, and warmth — like the design equivalent of a warm hug paired with a glass of red wine. The dark tones anchor the room; the lighter textures keep it inviting. It’s a balance that allows the room to feel curated yet lived-in.

And yes, roomies… we’re going black.
You know I love a black accent, a black wall, a black ceiling — I might even love them more than I love my coffee, and that’s saying something. But here’s the secret: black isn’t heavy when you use it intentionally. In this open-concept home, I used black on the walls and ceiling to frame the dining space, define it, and give it intimacy. It turns mealtime into an experience rather than a stop-and-go moment between errands. Black creates boundaries without building walls — iconic behavior, honestly.

Lighting, art, and meaningful little details pull the whole story together. A woven basket here, a sculptural branch there, and of course, my daughter’s beloved piano sitting proudly in the background. That piano is more than décor — it’s a memory, a heartbeat, a piece of life woven into the design. Because design isn’t just about the pretty; it’s about what the space holds for you.

Which brings me to something a little deeper.
In the video, I share a bit about my own journey — losing Jim, learning to love again, navigating dating after loss, and reminding myself to always have things to look forward to. Design has a funny way of mirroring life: sometimes you repaint the walls, sometimes you rebuild the whole room, and sometimes you just need to sit in the quiet and let the space hold you. I hope my story reminds you that it’s okay to honor where you’ve been while still leaving the doors open for what’s next.
